How to access international internet from China
If your work depends on international tools, plan connectivity before you arrive.
Do not assume every app, website, cloud service, email tool, messaging platform, or authentication flow behaves the same way in China as at home. Several behave differently or fail outright.
What to check before arrival
- Which work tools are essential?
- Does your employer have a China connectivity policy?
- Do you need access to Google, WhatsApp, Slack, GitHub, Figma, Notion, AWS, or other tools?
- Do your two-factor authentication methods work from China?
- Do you need a corporate enterprise home network, dual-WAN setup, mobile failover, remote desktop, or cloud workstation that your employer approves?
- Do you have a backup device and a backup connection?
Practical setup layers
1. Arrival backup
Use roaming or travel eSIM so you can communicate immediately.
2. Local mobile data
Set up a Chinese number and mobile data if staying longer.
3. Home internet
Confirm building provider and install promptly.
4. Router and workspace
Use decent networking hardware. A bad router makes a fast connection feel broken.
5. Compliance review
You are responsible for following applicable laws, platform terms, employer policies, and telecom provider rules.
